The 2024 harvest at Alpasion, which began on May 5th, was marked by a season of unpredictable weather patterns that demanded flexibility and adaptability from our team. Despite facing numerous climate-related challenges, we are proud to say that the quality of this year’s harvest exceeded expectations, producing wines that are both complex and expressive.
This season was particularly challenging due to erratic climatic conditions. From Zonda winds of varying intensity between August and March to two light frosts in the spring that caused indirect damage to the vines, our vineyard endured significant environmental stress. A ten-day heat wave further complicated the ripening process, leading to irregularities in the homogeneity and timing of grape maturation. This made it difficult to determine the ideal moment to harvest, as sugar maturity was often not accompanied by the usual balance of acidity and pH.
Given the unusual circumstances, we had to rely on our experience and palate to make critical decisions. Our team resorted to harvesting based on tasting alone, as the analytical data didn’t align with the organoleptic characteristics we were observing. This approach proved to be effective, allowing us to capture the unique expression of the vintage despite the climatic difficulties.
The harvest lasted for one month and ten days, and while we collected a total of 250,426 kg of grapes, this was slightly less than in previous years. However, the quality of the grapes was outstanding. The resulting wines show excellent color, fruit concentration, and balanced acidity, showcasing the resilience of our vineyards and the skill of our team.
Below is a breakdown of the 2024 harvest by variety:
Variety | kg |
Sauvignon Blanc | 14,295 |
Chardonnay | 12,804 |
Pinot Noir | 5,599 |
Merlot | 14,016 |
Syrah | 21,165 |
Malbec | 123,648 |
Cabernet Sauvignon | 14,142 |
Cabernet Franc | 31,791 |
Petit Verdot | 12,966 |
Total | 250,426 |
Despite the lower yield, we are confident that the 2024 vintage will be one to remember, with wines that reflect the character and resilience of our terroir and the unique conditions of this challenging year.
